The Theatrical in NYC (or ‘phibs on Broadway)

It’s a great experience to see friends and colleagues on stage in good productions and there’s an added excitement when they are on stages as big and as esteemed as those of the Richard Rogers American Airlines Theaters.   This week I had the pleasure of seeing ‘phib Carman Lacivita and Stephen Balantzian (who was in Amphibian’s Icarus last year) in Cyrano and ‘phib Jonathan Fielding in Pygmalion.  And I saw them both with Jay Duffer (seen only 2 weeks ago in The Mystery of Irma Vep).

Now if only I have the chance to see that other ‘phib in that other skit on the Great White Way…

David A. Miller, Amphibian Company Member and director of last year’s Below the Belt, is the Guest Amphiblogger for October.  Although Mr. Duffer preferred The Eliza Elixir, Mr. Miller’s favorite specialty drink at Pygmalion Opening Night Party was The Cockney Cocktail.

Jonathan, Carman, and Stephen. Great job to all 3 of you and congrats on the productions. It was a pleasure seeing you perform and then meeting you afterwards (and seeing you again, Stephen aka “Man of Steel”). Hopefully, all our paths will cross again in the near future.

David is a legend among the NYC theatre partygoers. If you hold tight to his coat tails (or in this case, just walk close to him) then you can move about the “pink” and “yellow” ticket rooms effortlessly. The upper echelon was none the wiser.

Before the show, however, I think perhaps we crashed Dana Ivey’s picture on the red carpet…but alas, we had to get past her pronto because the bar was closing in 5 minutes! Word to the wise: If a man asks you where the restrooms are in a condescending tone while at the theatre, simply state “I do not work here”. It will confuse the old dodger to no end and cause him to gruffly repeat to his wife “The young man says he doesn’t work here” all the while still believing an usher just was rude to him. Although it clearly must have been a comedy of errors, I would like to point out that I am not an usher (although I’ve experience seating people at my brother’s wedding) and was not dressed like an usher (although in the houselights, my blue shirt could have been easily misconstrued as white as well as my cell phone in my hand does sometimes eerily resemble a flashlight.) All this to say, I am not responsible as to whether or not this poor man’s bladder held to the bitter end. Once again, the bar was closing in 5 MINUTES!!! Priorities people…priorities! Kathleen, does it make you happy that I’ve shifted my dialogue from theatre to drinking?

Thanks David for allowing me to experience the theatrical with you in NYC. I wish both shows tremendous success and I look forward to more great things from all the phibs!

Well, yes it does make me happy that you have shifted to the subject of drinking. I mean, throughout that story about the man who thought you were an usher, I crying aloud, “Get to the point, man. Did you make it to the bar in time or not?” I have my priorities. As a matter of fact, I have so much work to do, but it’s Friday and in many bars, happy hour starts at 3. In other words, it’s been going on for an hour and a half without me. It’s very hard to focus.

I will be in NYC next week to see if Carman, Stephen, and Jonathan are any good in their little skits. I’m sad that I’m not special enough to attend an opening night party. Mostly I’m sad because they always have lots of alcohol.

On to another subject: Sarah Elizondo, little tadpole of a phib, is seeking information about moving to New York. Not only is she planning to move to New York, she has to do a big project for her Managing a Performance Career class. She tells me that her emails to certain of you who shall remain nameless and got no response. I know where all of you live. Any of you NYers have some advice for little sister?
