So, apropos of nothing, I have to tell you that I saw Tom Stoppard yesterday. In the
flesh. Outside the theatre where Rock ‘n’ Roll is playing. I am in love with his brain.
The play is…monumental. He is able to take these gigantic concepts and turn them into
cohesive stories. Sadly, if he wasn’t already famous, those plays would never be
produced. Expensive and ambitious and challenging. I was in heaven.

On a more personal note, I sat behind the McWhinersons, who did not stop complaining
from the moment they arrived. Too cold. My umbrella was sticking out too far. Too
many people in the theatre. The play was too long. My question is: Why do they go to
the theatre? God bless ‘em for going, despite the fact that it clealry makes them very
unhappy. They are spending $100 per ticket. They’re patrons and we have to take
care of them. I just always wonder what keeps them coming.

Tonight I will see Cyrano. If anyone complains I’m taking them down. Mama Kathleen
is very protective of her Phibs. I can’t wait to see the show. Should I wait by the
backstage door and scream with excitement when Carman comes out–then pretend
not to know who the big stars are?
